The spectacular Passion Play that has made this town famous is a lifetime experience. Watch from your premium seat as local villagers perform as they have since 1634 in this once in a decade event. THE HISTORY
As the plague spread across Europe in 1633, the villagers of Oberammergau vowed that they would put on a ‘Play of the Suffering, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ’. Since the vow was made, no one died from the plague.
THE PARTICIPANTS
As a result of a special law, all play participants (including actors, choir members, orchestra members, firemen and ushers) must have been born in Oberammergau or lived there for 20 years.
THE SCHEDULE
The planning is well underway for the 42nd Passion Play with over 500,000 visitors expected.
2015 – Preparations begin
The Oberammergau Council appointed the production team of the 2020 Passion Play and the preparations for the 2020 Passion Play began.
2017 – Schedule decided and confirmed
2019 – Actors announced
In spring, actors will be announced. More than 2,000 Oberammergau villagers will be participating in the 2020 Passion Play. By Ash Wednesday, in accordance with a long tradition, the ‘Beard and Hair Edict’, all participants in the play let their hair grow. In Autumn, rehearsals for the 42nd Passion Play will start.
2020 – Performance
The first performance of the 2020 Passion Play will be in May. The 2020 Passion Play ends in October.
